CrossFit Games 2021 will be taking place in a few weeks and many CrossFit Games participants are very excited. Other than the traditional CrossFit Games, events for women will be held. We're all familiar with the Reebok's equipment, the Pegboard contest, and the Cutting system. But what do we know about the womens' competition? Continue reading to learn more! Competition for women

This morning, the women's competition began at the 2021 Crossfit Games with the swim event. Jonne Koski was the winner in the first race. Tia Clair Toomey Orr was also victorious. Koski took the overall title after she held her lead through the entire competition. Tall and Eramoo O'Connell came in second and third, respectively. It was the first Games women's event and the women hoped to complete it.

The field is full of top-level athletes in the women's competition. The field features nine athletes, including a 19 year-old Australian powerhouse who won this competition last year. Kara Saunders of Australia, who was second in Australia and eleventh in the world in 2020, are also contenders. Andrea Nisler is another rising star. She competed in the team category in 2018 and placed third in the United States, and 15th overall in 2020. Aside from these athletes, the Women’s competition will also include a newcomer, Sara Sigmundsdottir, an Icelandan competitor, who won first place at the World Crossfit Games earlier.

Pegboard contest

Pegboard at Crossfit Games 2020 was a first. It was added to Crossfit Games' summer Olympic program alongside double-unders & dumbbell overhead Squats. Toomey-Orr set the record for most wins in a single Games event with 30. Sager won Event 11 for men and earned his third win of the Games. There were several tie in the contest but Toomey Orr's dominance was too strong to stop him winning.

Athletes train for the CrossFit Games by focusing on ten general physical fitness skills: cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility, power, speed, and agility. The Pegboard contest tests a competitor's grip strength and coordination. Two wooden pegs are held between the hands of each competitor to gauge their grip strength. After completing the Pegboard, the competition was intense and athletes felt a sense of accomplishment.


Cutting system

The CrossFit Games will once again employ a cutting system for the individual competition. This is not as extreme as past Games cuts, but it is very different this year. The competition consists of 15 individual events, so a first cut to 30 athletes is likely after the seventh or eighth event. CrossFit's decision on how to adjust the points distributed after cuts remains a question. The scoring table used to determine the winners in the 2019 games was very similar to the one used to determine the losers in 2021. This is why it's most likely that the current system will be used.

This year's field consists of 236 athletes, making it the largest in the history of the CrossFit Games. The six first events lead to major cuts. The field is reduced down to 75 athletes. To determine the top ten, the top 30 athletes compete in a sprint tandem. The top 20 athletes will then compete in the six remaining events. Veteran Games participants criticized Castro's system, claiming that the cuts were too drastic.

Equipment from Reebok

Reebok announced new CrossFit Games footwear, clothing and other equipment. The Nano X1 shoes are the new model. They're made to fit multiple fitness needs. Reebok has billed this shoe as "the shoe of fitness," but it actually feels more like a traditional training shoe. DuPont's Kevlar fabric is used for the upper, which promotes breathability and durability. The firm midsole and RopePro tech enhance the responsiveness of the shoes.

CrossFit's sponsorship contract with Reebok is ending at the end of 2020. There will not be a title sponsor for the Games. The Games have been sponsored by Reebok for over a decade, and it's now clear that the company's involvement will be decreasing. Reebok won't be funding the Games' prize fund, but will continue making all athletic apparel and equipment worn athletes by, including the Reebok gear. The company will no longer call itself the "Reebok CrossFit Game", as it currently does.
